Steven Haberman is a Professor of Actuarial Science at Bayes Business School, part of City St George's, University of London. He has held senior leadership roles including Deputy Dean (2002–2012) and Dean (2012–2015). His academic background includes a BA (first class) in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD and DSc in Actuarial Science from City University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and Royal Statistical Society.
His research focuses on actuarial science and applied statistics, including stochastic mortality modeling (e.g., the Renshaw-Haberman model), pension systems, and longevity risk. He has authored/co-authored 180+ papers and 5 books, including Modern Actuarial Theory and Practice and Actuarial Models for Disability Insurance. He served as Founding Editor of the Journal of Pension Economics and Finance and currently leads Risks as Editor-in-Chief.
He has supervised 33 doctoral students and contributed to policy through roles like Associate Director of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' Actuarial Research Centre (2016–2020). Awards include an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa (2018) and research prizes from the Institute of Actuaries (1985, 1990) and Society of Actuaries (2004).
His professional engagements include Chair of the Board of Governors of the London Foundation for Banking and Finance and membership in regulatory bodies like the Financial Reporting Council's Board for Actuarial Standards.
