Steven Groen is a C.C. Hsiung Visiting Assistant Professor at Lehigh University's Department of Mathematics, working with Joseph Kramer-Miller. From 2019-2025, he was a PhD student at the University of Warwick under Dr. Damiano Testa, focusing on arithmetic geometry and algebraic number theory. His research emphasizes p-torsion of abelian varieties in characteristic p, elliptic curves, and arithmetic statistics. He will join Utrecht University as a postdoc in 2025 under Valentijn Karemaker.
Education: BSc/MSc in Mathematics from University of Groningen (advisor: Jaap Top). Teaching roles include supervision of first-year students and courses on Elliptic Curves and Galois Theory at Warwick (2020-2022).
Research interests span geometric methods in number theory, particularly curves and abelian varieties in positive characteristic. His work combines algebraic geometry techniques with computational number theory, evidenced by publications on Cartier operators, isogeny structures, and cohomological obstructions.
Active in conferences since 2019, including Young Researchers in Algebraic Number Theory (Glasgow/Bristol), Mordell 2022 (Cambridge), and Arithmetic, Geometry, Cryptography conferences. Engaged in reading groups on advanced topics like Shimura varieties, Fano 3-folds, and Hodge-Tate representations.
