Steven Frankel

Steven Frankel is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis, Department of Mathematics, within the School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on geometric topology, dynamics, and geometric group theory, with an emphasis on low-dimensional spaces and their interplay with dynamical systems. Frankel holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has held positions at Yale University and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he received the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fellowship.

Frankel's research investigates relationships between the geometry of spaces, their symmetries, and supported dynamical systems. Key interests include 3-manifolds, foliations, hyperbolic geometry, quasigeodesic flows, pseudo-Anosov flows, and group actions on circles/trees. His work is supported by the National Science Foundation.

Publications span topics like quasigeodesic flows, branching foliations, and partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, often in collaboration with leading researchers. Recent work includes studies on orbit equivalences of pseudo-Anosov flows and veering triangulations.

Frankel’s academic journey includes a PhD from Cambridge (2013 thesis: Quasigeodesic flows from infinity) and postdoctoral roles at Yale and the IAS. He has received NSF CAREER Awards and maintains an active research program in geometric topology and dynamical systems.
