Dr. Steven E. Franklin served as President & Vice-Chancellor of Trent University from 2009 to 2014, leading strategic initiatives to enhance academic excellence, financial stability, and community engagement. Post-presidency, he returned to research and teaching in environmental remote sensing within Trent’s Geography and Environmental Resource departments. His academic career includes roles as Vice President of Research at the University of Saskatchewan and faculty positions at Waterloo, Calgary, and Memorial University.
Research focuses on remote sensing applications for biodiversity, wildlife habitat analysis, and environmental management. Notable contributions include over 120 refereed articles and four books, including Remote Sensing for Biodiversity and Wildlife Management. Awards include the Canadian Remote Sensing Society Gold Medal (2007) and a Sustainability Award from the Canadian Institute of Mining.
Key leadership achievements include launching Trent’s first Integrated Plan, expanding programs in Sustainable Agriculture and Journalism, and overseeing major infrastructure projects like the Life and Health Sciences Building and Bagnani Hall. He also championed interdisciplinary education and undergraduate research opportunities through initiatives like the Enhancing Undergraduate Learners’ Experience (EULE) program.
