Prof. Steven Dooley is a Professor of Hepatology at Heidelberg University's Mannheim Medical Faculty, affiliated with the II. Medical Clinic specializing in Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases. His research focuses on TGF-β signaling pathways in liver fibrosis, cholangiocarcinoma, and biliary diseases. He leads the Molecular Hepatology working group, which investigates mechanisms of fibrogenesis, tumor promotion, and therapeutic interventions using advanced technologies like the GeoMX Digital Spatial Profiler and live-cell imaging platforms.
Key research interests include the role of TGF-β2 in cholestatic liver diseases, development of antisense oligonucleotide therapies, and understanding epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in hepatocytes. His work integrates systems biology approaches and mouse models to dissect disease progression. Prof. Dooley's group is supported by DFG grants and the BMBF-funded LiSyM consortium, focusing on liver regeneration and cancer tipping points (C-TIP-HCC project).
Collaborative projects involve the Cell Isolation and Molecular Imaging Core Facility, enabling spatial biology analysis and multi-omics integration. His contributions span from basic molecular mechanisms to translational medicine, addressing unmet needs in fibrosis and liver cancer therapies.
