Steven Doane is a Professor of Violoncello at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, and currently holds the title of Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is an internationally renowned soloist, chamber musician, and pedagogue, known for his recordings with pianist Barry Snyder on the Bridge label. His performances span prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and London’s Wigmore Hall.
Education: BM from Oberlin Conservatory, MM from SUNY Stony Brook. Awards include the Eisenhart Award (Eastman’s highest teaching honor), Piatigorsky Prize, and Naumburg Chamber Music Award. His recordings, such as the complete Gabriel Fauré works, earned the Diapason d’Or in France.
Research and Performance: Focused on cello repertoire, chamber music collaborations, and pedagogical innovation. Notable recordings include works by Rachmaninoff, Britten, and Frank Bridge. Active in residencies at the Royal Academy of Music and performances worldwide.
Awards and Recognition: Highlights include the Watson Foundation Grant (1975), Naumburg Chamber Music Award (1980), and teaching accolades from Eastman and New England Conservatory.
Leadership and Legacy: Member of the New Arts Trio, Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center debut in Don Quixote (1983), and mentorship of numerous students through his pedagogical approach.
