Steven Courtney is a Professor of Sociology of Education Leadership at the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), University of Manchester. His research focuses on critical approaches to educational leadership and policy, including system leadership, charisma, depoliticisation, and education privatisation. He holds roles as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Critical Studies in Education and co-convenor of the Critical Education Leadership and Policy (CELP) group. Courtney previously taught in Paris and London, served in leadership roles in schools, and completed an MA and PhD at the University of Manchester. His awards include the BELMAS Distinguished Fellowship and Excellence in Teaching Award.
Education qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Manchester (2015), a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership (2011), and PGCE in French/Spanish (1999). External roles include External Examiner at UCL, University of Exeter, and Warwick. His research explores power dynamics in education policy and leadership, emphasizing equity and public education.
Supervision includes current PhD students (e.g., Elaine Campbell, Saif Al Washahi) and completed projects (e.g., Karen Healey, Pinyan Lin). Courtney’s work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education.
