Steven Brakman

Steven Brakman is a Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business, specializing in Global Economics & Management at the University of Groningen. He holds positions as Research Fellow at the CESifo Institute and Academic Partner at the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis. His expertise spans International Economics, Regional Economics, and Globalization dynamics. Brakman has contributed extensively to understanding trade patterns, agglomeration effects, and the economic impacts of geopolitical events like Brexit. He earned his PhD (cum laude) in Economics from Groningen in 1991, with a dissertation on trade flow modeling. His career includes roles as Assistant Professor (1988–1996), Associate Professor (1996–2002), and has held visiting scholar positions at institutions like Yale University and Cambridge University. Brakman’s research addresses contemporary issues such as demographic shifts, global trade resilience, and the interplay between technology and employment. He serves as Managing Editor of the Journal of Regional Science and has advised numerous organizations, including the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
