Dr. Steven Boyd is a Professor at the University of Calgary with appointments across multiple faculties. He holds a primary position in the Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Radiology, and joint appointments in the Schulich School of Engineering within both the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His academic career is deeply rooted at the University of Calgary, where he completed both his MSc and PhD in Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Boyd's research focuses on medical imaging technologies to understand bone loss mechanisms through longitudinal analyses. His work centers on bone degeneration mechanisms, particularly osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, studying bone mineralization and microarchitectural development that contribute to bone quality and strength. His laboratory has developed custom analysis tools applied in both preclinical (animal) and clinical settings, allowing for effective translation of knowledge from controlled preclinical studies to clinical applications.
He has participated in several university strategic initiatives including Engineering Solutions for Health (2015-2021), Infections, Inflammations and Chronic Diseases (2015-2021), and One Health (2020-2025). Dr. Boyd leads the Bone Imaging Laboratory, which serves as the hub for his research activities.
