Steven Bethard

Steven Bethard is an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona in the College of Information Science, with courtesy appointments in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics. His research spans Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Information Extraction with a focus on temporal modeling and clinical applications.

Research interests include modeling linguistic time expressions, normalizing text to medical/geospatial ontologies, and developing transformer-based architectures for clinical NLP. He leads the Computational Language Understanding Lab and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams in cognitive science and applied mathematics. His work addresses domain adaptation challenges, metadata extraction, and multi-hop question answering systems.

Teaching includes courses on Neural Networks (ISTA 457/INFO 557) and Information Research Methods (INFO 507). He has published extensively on temporal relation extraction, named entity recognition, and sentiment analysis across clinical and social media domains.
