Steven B. Miles is a Professor of History and Interim Director of Global Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds a PhD from the University of Washington. His research focuses on migration, diaspora, and urban history in late imperial China, particularly in Guangdong and Guangxi regions. Key works include The Sea of Learning (2006), Upriver Journeys (2017), and the upcoming Chinese Diasporas: A Social History (Cambridge UP). Miles has led digital projects like 'Cantonese Migrant Networks' using epigraphical data. His awards include NEH and Mellon fellowships. Current projects explore 'seasonality and cities' in 19th-century China.
