Steven A. Goldman

Steven A. Goldman is the URMC Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience and Neurology at the University of Rochester, with a concurrent part-time appointment as Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen. He serves as co-Director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine (CTN) in both Rochester and Copenhagen. His academic career includes roles as Dean Zutes Chair in Biology of the Aging Brain and former Chairman of the Department of Neurology. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Goldman’s research focuses on stem cell-based therapies for neurodegenerative and demyelinating diseases, neuro-oncology, and glial biology. He has over 250 publications and holds 30+ patents.

Education: MD from Cornell University (1984), PhD from Rockefeller University (1983), residency in Neurology at New York Hospital-Cornell and Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Awards include the Jacob Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award and Novo Nordisk Foundation Laureate Award. His work is funded by NIH/NINDS, Adelson Medical Research Foundation, and others.

Research interests include cell regeneration in the brain, stem cell modeling of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Huntington’s, schizophrenia), and glial contributions to neurological disorders. His lab explores therapeutic strategies using human glial chimeric models and oligodendrocyte progenitor cell transplantation.

Publications highlight advancements in neural progenitor cell therapies, glial-neuronal interactions, and mechanisms of disease progression. Awards and honors reflect his leadership in neurology and stem cell research. Goldman’s interdisciplinary approach bridges basic science and clinical applications, particularly in translational neuromedicine.
