Steve Whyard is a Professor and Associate Dean (Research) in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Science. His research spans molecular genetics, developmental biology, and biotechnology, focusing on gene regulation in insects and vertebrates.
Research Interests:
- Molecular mechanisms of insect sexual differentiation and innate immunity
- Role of microRNAs in development and neurodegenerative pathology
- Biotechnological approaches to pest control, including genetic manipulation of mosquitoes and sea lampreys
- Host-pathogen interactions in frogs and environmental DNA detection of invasive species
- Molecular interactions in West Nile virus transmission
Training & Techniques: His projects offer expertise in RNA interference, genetic transformation, bioinformatics, cell biology, and protein biochemistry. Collaborations include researchers like M. Drebot, R. Lindsay, J. Koprivnikar, and M. Docker.
