Dr. Steve Shabel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He investigates how reward and punishment processing in brain circuits, particularly the lateral habenula and amygdala, contribute to depression and addiction susceptibility. His work employs optogenetics, slice electrophysiology, and behavioral models.
- Education: B.S. in Biology from UC San Diego, Ph.D. in Neuroscience from UC San Francisco.
- Postdoctoral training at UC San Diego with Roberto Malinow.
His research aims to characterize individual variations in reward system function and their role in affective disorders. Techniques include:
- Innovative optical methods to measure brain circuit encoding of reward and punishment.
- Optogenetics to manipulate motivated behavior.
- Slice electrophysiology to study neurotransmission in depression and addiction models.
Recent studies highlight stress-induced transformations in habenula signaling, serotonin’s role in suppressing aversive inputs, and parallels between fear/disgust processing in the amygdala. He mentors graduate students Natalia Rodriguez-Sosa, Lupita Rios, and Srijani Biswas.
