Steve Paterson

Steve Paterson is an External Lecturer at Robert Gordon’s University and an independent materials & corrosion adviser, director of Arbeadie Consultants based in Aberdeenshire. With over 36 years in the oil and gas industry, he held the role of Principal Technical Expert for Upstream Materials at Shell, specializing in materials, corrosion, welding, and integrity management across UK, Netherlands, Norway, and Malaysia. He holds a PhD and B.Sc(Eng) in Metallurgy from Imperial College London, is a Chartered Engineer, and maintains professional memberships with IOM3, TWI, and the Institute of Corrosion. He chairs the Imperial College Materials External Advisory Panel and has chaired committees such as the EFC Oil & Gas Working Party and Energy Institute Corrosion Management Committee. His expertise spans oil & gas production, refining, and R&D sectors.

Education: PhD and B.Sc(Eng) in Metallurgy from Imperial College London.

Professional roles include review panel membership at the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre and active participation in industry-standard-setting committees. His advisory work focuses on bridging academic research with industrial applications in materials integrity and corrosion prevention.
