Steve Newman is an Associate Professor of English at Temple University, specializing in British and Scottish literature of the Long Eighteenth Century (1660–1832). He serves as Director of Graduate Studies in Temple’s English Department. His research focuses on the intersection of literature, cultural values, and digital humanities. Newman has authored Ballad Collection, Lyric, and the Canon (2007) and edited Allan Ramsay’s The Gentle Shepherd (2022), part of a major £1 million AHRC-funded Collected Works project.
His current book project, Narrative of Value, employs Scottish Enlightenment thought to defend humanities’ relevance against contemporary critiques. Collaborative digital initiatives include a TEI/MEI edition of The Beggar’s Opera and a 2025 staged adaptation The Beggar’s Trio. Newman has led Temple’s London/Scotland Study Abroad programs since 2013, emphasizing global education access.
