Steve Greenlee is a Professor of the Practice in Journalism at Boston University’s College of Communication. Previously, he served as Executive Editor of the Portland Press Herald, leading the paper to national recognition, including a Pulitzer Prize finalist designation for a climate change series he directed. He has extensive experience in accountability journalism, digital transformation, and media management. His career spans over 24 years, including 12 years at The Boston Globe as an editor and jazz critic.
- Education: BA in Political Science & Journalism from the University of Rhode Island.
Research interests include investigative journalism, public’s right to know, and media innovation. He has collaborated with PBS Frontline and The Boston Globe, and recently led the Portland Press Herald through a transition to nonprofit ownership. His work emphasizes ethical journalism and community engagement.

Advising and Grants: Greenlee has guided student investigations, including COM students’ award-winning harness racing investigation (2023) and Tijuana immigration reporting (2025). His collaborations foster cross-organizational partnerships in journalism education and practice.
Labs/Teams: Active in mentoring BU journalism students and collaborating with industry partners to advance accountability reporting and digital media strategies.
