Steve Gilroy is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Performance and Creative Director in the School of Design, Arts and Creative Industries at Northumbria University. With extensive professional experience spanning 25 years, he has held roles at the Royal Court Theatre, Live Theatre (Newcastle), and collaborated with artists like Richard Dawson and Kate Craddock. His work bridges academic research and professional practice through auto-biographical and politically engaged documentary theatre.
Education: BA (Hons) in Drama (1993).
Research focuses on human conflict and trauma through theatre, including projects on post-war families in northeast England, Palestinian olive farmers, Euro Crisis survivors, and dementia care. His works Motherland, Facts on the Ground, and In the Middle of the West have garnered critical acclaim and awards. Current projects include the Angel collaboration with disabled performers and leadership roles at Lawnmowers Theatre Company and Murmur Theatre Company.
Awards include Fringe First, Stage Award for Best Ensemble, and a Amnesty International nomination. His practice emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and socially engaged performance.
