Steve Bialostok is a Professor of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at the University of Wyoming's School of Teacher Education. He holds a B.A. from the University of the Pacific, an M.S.W. from California State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona (2000).
His research focuses on educational and linguistic anthropology, employing discourse analysis and ethnography to explore power dynamics, identity formation, and inequality. Current projects include a 5-year ethnography in Denver examining elderly Black men's domino-playing communities amid gentrification, alongside earlier work in the Wind River Reservation and Afghanistan. His theoretical frameworks draw heavily on Foucault and Bourdieu.
Teaching emphases include sociocultural literacies, critical pedagogy, and social theory application. His scholarship addresses neoliberalism's impact on education, literacy campaigns, and the intersections of capitalism with everyday practices.
Advising includes doctoral student Nikki Baldwin (2013), whose work bridges early childhood administration and critical pedagogy. Research locations span diverse contexts from urban gentrification zones to Indigenous communities, reflecting his commitment to marginalized voices.
