Associate Professor Stephen Wilson is a cognitive neuroscientist and Associate Professor in Speech Pathology at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. He leads the Language Neuroscience Laboratory, where he conducts research on the neural basis of language, particularly focusing on aphasia. His work combines state-of-the-art functional and structural neuroimaging techniques with comprehensive language assessments to understand language processing in the brain, the effects of brain damage on language, and the mechanisms supporting recovery in individuals with aphasia.
Professor Wilson's research interests span multiple areas within cognitive neuroscience and speech pathology. His primary focus is on understanding how language is processed in the brain and how this processing is affected by neurological damage, particularly in individuals with aphasia. He investigates the neural mechanisms that support recovery of language function after stroke and other brain injuries. His work also extends to primary progressive aphasia, a neurodegenerative condition affecting language abilities. More recently, he has been developing culturally appropriate assessment tools for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with language disorders, recognizing the need for linguistically appropriate aphasia batteries in Indigenous languages and creoles. His research incorporates a wide range of methodologies including fMRI, lesion-symptom mapping, naturalistic language analysis, and machine learning approaches to understand language processing and recovery.
Analysis of Professor Wilson's recent publications reveals a strong focus on understanding the neural correlates of language recovery after stroke, with particular attention to naturalistic language production, rhythm processing, and the use of advanced neuroimaging techniques. Professor Wilson is currently leading two major research projects:

He is actively supervising PhD students working on projects related to post-stroke aphasia recovery and communication partner training for bilingual patients with aphasia. His supervision approach emphasizes the integration of basic neuroscience with clinical applications, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to both research and clinical practice in speech pathology.
