Stephen West is a Professor of Theoretical Particle Physics at the Centre for Particle Physics and Astronomy, Department of Physics, Royal Holloway, University of London. He holds a DPhil (PhD) in theoretical particle physics from the University of Oxford (2005), following an undergraduate degree from Oriel College, Oxford (2002). He transitioned from postdoctoral roles at Oxford and a fellowship at Magdalen College to join Royal Holloway as a Lecturer in 2009, advancing to his current rank. His research focuses on Beyond the Standard Model physics, particle cosmology, and dark matter studies, leveraging experiments like the LHC and quantum sensor technologies. He teaches first-year mathematics (PH1110) and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through his work.
Research Projects:
- Leading the QUEST-DMC initiative (2020–2025) on superfluid helium detectors for dark matter.
- Contributing to the Consolidated Grant for the Centre for Particle Physics (2022–2025).
- Mentoring in the Research Fellows Enhanced Program (2021–2023).
Collaborations: Co-investigator in projects like Quantum Sensing for the Hidden Sector (QSHS) and the High Luminosity LHC collaboration.
