Stephen West serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor at St. John Fisher College where he teaches introductory and advanced creative writing courses. He is the faculty advisor for The ANGLE, Fisher's student-edited national literary magazine that features writing and art by college-aged students from across the United States.
His academic interests include:
- creative writing
- visual art practice
- contemporary literary publishing
- gender and masculinity studies
- book arts and letterpress printing
- intersections of literature and visual art
West's scholarly work explores the tensions between personal identity, professional aspirations, and societal expectations of masculinity. His creative nonfiction examines how writers navigate their artistic ambitions alongside personal responsibilities and cultural expectations.
His recent publication Soft-Boiled: An Investigation of Masculinity and The Writer's Life (2022) represents a significant contribution to contemporary literary discourse. This book-length hybrid essay combines memoir, investigative reporting, and cultural criticism to examine American manhood through the lens of his experiences shadowing a private investigator while balancing his identity as a writer, husband, and father.
West has mentored numerous students involved with The ANGLE literary magazine, including managing editors and readers across poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction genres. In May 2020, he observed that 'there is stability in art made by young people expressing their guts out, even as the world tremors.'
His educational background includes:
- MFA, M.A. from University of Iowa
- B.A. from State University of New York at Geneseo
