Stephen W Schondelmeyer is a Professor in the Pharmaceutical Care and Health Systems department at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. His research focuses on pharmaceutical economics, drug pricing dynamics, and healthcare policy with particular expertise in biosimilars, Medicare Part D, and pharmaceutical supply chain issues.
Dr. Schondelmeyer's research interests span critical areas in pharmacy and healthcare policy:
- Pharmaceutical economics and drug pricing structures
- Biosimilar adoption and utilization patterns
- Medicare Part D program analysis and patient costs
- Pharmacogenomics implementation in clinical practice
- Drug supply chain resilience and shortages
- Prescription drug coverage policies
His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on the economic and policy dimensions of pharmaceutical care, particularly examining how pricing mechanisms, reimbursement models, and regulatory frameworks affect drug access and utilization. Much of his recent work analyzes biosimilars (especially filgrastim), cost-saving opportunities across healthcare settings, and the impact of drug rebates on patient out-of-pocket costs.
Dr. Schondelmeyer leads the multi-year "Rx Price Watch" project funded by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), which has been continuously funded from 2022 through 2025. He also serves as Co-Principal Investigator on the "Resilient Drug Supply Chain" (RDSC) project addressing pharmaceutical supply chain vulnerabilities.
His expertise has been sought by media outlets during critical healthcare periods, particularly regarding drug shortages during the pandemic. He has provided expert commentary on how the coronavirus pandemic exposed longstanding drug supply chain issues that healthcare providers have faced for "more than two decades."
