Stephen V. Bittner is a Professor and School Chair at Sonoma State University's Department of History. He specializes in Russian/Soviet and Eastern European History, with a focus on cultural, political, and environmental themes. His works include seminal books such as Whites and Reds: A History of Wine in the Lands of Tsar and Commissar (2021) and The Many Lives of Khrushchev’s Thaw (2008). Current projects explore Soviet Antarctica and the intersections of refugee communities from Bolshevism and Nazism.
Education: BA from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1993); PhD in Russian/Soviet History from University of Chicago (2000).
Research Interests: Soviet history, Cold War dynamics, environmental history, refugee studies, and cultural exchanges. His work integrates political, social, and economic dimensions of historical analysis.
