Dr. Stephen Thong is the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Ave Maria University, holding the rank of Associate Professor of Chemistry. He is also the Director of the Physics Program. With over 25 years of applied chemistry experience, Dr. Thong has led global innovation teams at major corporations such as Gillette (P&G), Ranir Global (Perrigo), and Church & Dwight, focusing on personal care product development including oral care, shaving formulations, and skin care. His research expertise lies in interfacial and formulation chemistry, with over 20 patents in these areas.
Education: B.Sc. in Chemistry from Bowling Green State University, followed by M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Northwestern University. His professional journey includes roles in the US, China, and Europe, leading research centers and collaborating with marketing teams to bridge scientific innovation with consumer needs.
Research Interests: Applied Chemistry in oral care and skin care product development, interfacial chemistry, formulation science, and product innovation. His work emphasizes translating laboratory findings into practical consumer products, with notable contributions to toothpaste efficacy, desensitizing treatments, and self-heating shave products.
