Nikolai Denkov is a Professor at Sofia University's Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, where he has served as Head of the Laboratory of Active Formulations and Materials since 2017. Previously, he held leadership roles including Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering (2008-2015) and Vice Dean of the Faculty (2004-2008). His distinguished career includes governmental service as Deputy Minister (2014-2016) and Minister of Education and Science of Bulgaria (January-May 2017), alongside international research positions at Unilever R&D (USA), Rhone Poulenc (France), and Nagayama Protein Array Project (Japan).
His research focuses on the fundamental physics of disperse systems and interfacial phenomena. Key interests include:
- Mechanisms of foam and emulsion formation/stability
- Solubilization kinetics in micellar solutions
- Capillary forces and biophysical aspects of oil digestion
- Engineering of 2D/3D colloid crystals
- Surfactant applications in detergency and material science
His work bridges theoretical modeling with industrial applications, particularly in consumer goods and material science sectors. Over his career, Denkov has established significant industry-academia partnerships driving innovation in soft matter systems.
His scientific contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards including the Solvay Prize and election to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Notable honors include:
