Professor Stephen Sitch is a leading expert in Physical Geography at the University of Exeter, specializing in Earth System Science with a focus on vegetation-climate interactions. He leads the TRENDY initiative, contributing to the Global Carbon Project's annual budget assessments, and is a theme leader in the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES). His career includes roles at the Met Office Hadley Centre and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
Qualifications: BSc in Mathematics (University of York), MSc in Atmospheric Sciences (UEA), PhD in Plant Ecology (University of Lund, Sweden).
Research Interests: Vegetation dynamics, biogeochemical cycles, land-use change impacts, and ecosystem-atmosphere interactions. He emphasizes field-based science to validate models like the LPJ Dynamic Global Vegetation Model.
Key Projects: Amazon-SOS (NERC-funded), XFires (ESA-funded), and global carbon flux analyses. His work bridges climate modeling, Earth Observation, and policy-relevant climate science.
