Stephen Muecke is a Research Professor at the Nulungu Research Institute, University of Notre Dame Australia (Broome Campus), and an Emeritus Professor of Ethnography at the University of New South Wales. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Western Australia, a Mès.L from Paris VIII, and a BA(Hons) from Monash University. His work spans Environmental Humanities, Indigenous Cultural Studies, and French Studies, with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and ecological critique. Muecke has held visiting professorships at Freie Universität Berlin and Université de Paris 13, and is affiliated with the Oceania Observatory of Humanities for the Environment and Outside Opinion.
His research emphasizes Indigenous knowledge systems, colonial histories, and the Indian Ocean region. Notable books include The Children’s Country (2020) and translations of works by Isabelle Stengers and Bruno Latour. He has pioneered fictocritical writing, blending academic rigor with creative narrative. Awards include the Centenary Medal and Fellowships at the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
Muecke’s advising spans postgraduate supervision in literary and cultural studies. His grants and collaborations involve projects on Aboriginal philosophy, environmental justice, and cross-cultural dialogues. He contributes to initiatives like the Griffith Review and Extracting the Ocean, exploring resource extraction ethics. His creative works, including poetry and experimental essays, further bridge academic and artistic practices.
