Stephen Mossman is a Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Manchester's History Department (L5). His research focuses on late medieval intellectual, religious, and cultural history in German- and Dutch-speaking Europe, with special attention to manuscript culture and cross-cultural interactions. He has held prestigious fellowships including Marie Curie (2012-14), Alexander von Humboldt (2020-21), and a British Academy mid-career fellowship (2022-23).
Education: BA/MA in History and German from St Peter's College, Oxford and University of Bonn (1997-2001); PhD at Oriel College, Oxford and University of Freiburg (2002-06). Postdoctoral roles included Junior Research Fellowship at St John's College, Oxford (2006-09) before joining Manchester.
Research interests emphasize reconstructing medieval thought and mentality, particularly through manuscript analysis. Key projects include studies on Marquard von Lindau, the Strasbourg convent zum Grünen Wörth, and medieval perceptions of Islam. He critiques traditional narratives of 'Friends of God' movements and explores textual transmission networks in the Rhineland.
Supervised 9 doctoral students focusing on medieval European history, including projects on manuscript transmission, religious geography, and medieval libraries. Active in academic governance as University Senate member (2018-2021 and 2022-2025).
