Stephen Meir Tollman serves as Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand's Faculty of Health Sciences and School of Public Health, leading the MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt). His work centers on rural health dynamics in South Africa through longitudinal demographic surveillance.
His research spans public health, epidemiology, and global health with focus on aging populations, chronic diseases, and social determinants. Key areas include hypertension management, HIV/AIDS epidemiology, mental health communication, and non-communicable disease transitions in resource-limited settings. Methodologically, he integrates genomic analysis, verbal autopsy tools, and mixed-methods approaches to address health system challenges.
Recent publications (2022-2023) reveal strong emphasis on rural health transitions during pandemics (SARS-CoV-2), aging-related conditions (Alzheimer's, multimorbidity), and diagnostic innovation (epilepsy). His work consistently applies trans-ethnic genomic frameworks and examines behavioral factors like alcohol use and mental health communication within South Africa's unique demographic context.
Research funding is secured through major international partnerships including:
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
- Medical Research Council (MRC)
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)
- National Science Foundation (NSF)
Tollman directs the Agincourt Health and Socio-Demographic Surveillance System, part of the INDEPTH Network, which tracks health transitions across 25,000 households in rural Mpumalanga province. This platform supports multi-country studies on aging, infectious diseases, and health system resilience with active partnerships in Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, and Burkina Faso.
