Stephen McFarland serves as Professor and Chair of Labor Studies within the College of Arts & Humanities at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), having joined the faculty in 2020 after previously holding an Assistant Professor position in Geography at the University of Tampa. His academic appointments also include adjunct teaching roles at City University of New York, Sarah Lawrence College, and Columbia University.
His educational credentials feature a Ph.D. in Geography from The Graduate Center, City University of New York; an M.R.P. in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University; and a B.A. in English from Trinity College, Hartford, CT.
As a Labor Geographer, Dr. McFarland's research centers on labor geography, geographic information systems, cartography, urban social movements, labor history, labor and climate justice, and race-labor dynamics. His scholarly work examines how organized labor shapes urban landscapes through publications on U.S. union halls, workers' mapmaking practices, urban sprawl's impact on union strength, Confederate monument removal conflicts, and immigrant political engagement.
Dr. McFarland is an active California Faculty Association member serving as a delegate to the LA County Federation of Labor. He has participated in the Pasadena Tenants Union's 2021-2022 rent control campaign and supports Starbucks Workers United. A Brooklyn native, he pursues hiking, biking, gardening, and documentary film in his personal time.
