Stephen McCauley is a Professor of the Practice of English and Co-Director of the Creative Writing Program at Brandeis University's Department of English. He holds an M.F.A. from Columbia University and a B.A. from the University of Vermont. His academic work focuses on narrative techniques, comedic literature, and contemporary fiction. McCauley has authored nine novels, including You Only Call When You're in Trouble (2024) and The Object of My Affection (1988), several of which were adapted into films. He has received the Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture.
His teaching emphasizes creative writing and literary analysis, with courses like Directed Writing Short Fiction and Fiction. McCauley actively engages in literary communities, co-hosting the OpenBook podcast and discussing topics like independent bookstores, diversity in publishing, and the evolution of the short story. He has also contributed articles to major publications including The New York Times and Vanity Fair.
McCauley's research interests span modern relationships, satire, and narrative innovation. He advocates for the role of literature in dark times, citing influences like Charles Dickens and Patricia Highsmith. Beyond academia, he practices yoga, plays the ukulele, and enjoys ice skating.
