Stephen Marsh is a Professor in the Department of Information Technology, Trust Systems at Ontario Tech University's Faculty of Business and Information Technology. He holds adjunct professorships at Carleton University (Systems and Computer Engineering/Cognitive Science) and the University of New Brunswick (Computer Science). His research focuses on applying social norms like trust, forgiveness, and wisdom to computational systems, pioneering concepts like Computational Trust, Device Comfort, and co-originating Slow Computing. His work spans security, privacy, HCI, and AI, aiming to empower people through socio-technical systems.
- Educations: BSc (1990) and PhD (1994) in Computing Science from the University of Stirling, Scotland.
Research interests include computational trust models, mobile device security, regret management, and social knowledge applications. He chairs IFIP Working Group 11.11 (Trust Management) and represents Canada in IFIP Technical Committee 11 (Security & Privacy). Previously, he worked 16 years in Canadian government labs (NRC/CRC) and was a lecturer at the University of Stirling (1993–1996).
His interdisciplinary work bridges computer science and social sciences, with publications in areas like intrusion detection, information flow, and multi-agent systems. He advises graduate/undergraduate projects and has authored/co-authored numerous conference papers, journal articles, and patents.
