Stephen Mann is an Associate Professor in the English department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, currently serving as Interim Chair of the Music Department. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of South Carolina (2011), along with an M.A. in Linguistics and B.A. in French and Russian. His research focuses on sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and American English dialects, with particular attention to intersections of language, gender, and sexuality.
Mann teaches courses such as Introduction to Linguistics, Language Attitudes and Ideologies, and African American English. His work explores topics like language perception in LGBTQ+ communities, rural-urban dialect dynamics, and the role of drag performance in identity construction. Recent publications include studies on community arts resilience during the pandemic and listener perception of queer speech patterns.
He has been recognized as treasurer-elect of the Association for Queer Anthropology and presented at conferences like the American Dialect Society. His teaching history spans over 20 courses, emphasizing language diversity and sociocultural contexts.
