J Calder is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Colorado Boulder, with affiliate roles in Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, Women & Gender Studies, and LGBTQ Studies. They advise the Linguistics Honors Program and the Sociocultural, Anthropological, and Interactional Linguistics (SAIL) undergraduate track.
Calder’s research centers on sociocultural linguistics and linguistic anthropology, examining marginalized identities—particularly queer/trans and BIPOC communities—through linguistic and embodied practices. Their work explores non-normative gender expression in radical drag queen communities in San Francisco, analyzing the interplay of language and visual presentation. They also investigate the 'cisgender listening subject,' a societal framework that enforces gender-normative language expectations, and its marginalizing effects on trans individuals. Collaborations include studies on phonetic variation and intersectionality with Sharese King, and work on nonbinary language with Ariana Steele and Dani Heffernan.
Recent publications span interdisciplinary topics like entrepreneurial training efficacy, economic impacts of criminal violence in Mexico, and policy analysis. These works bridge economics, criminology, and public policy, reflecting Calder’s commitment to interdisciplinary research.
Calder’s advising and collaborative roles highlight their dedication to undergraduate education and community-focused research. While no grants or labs are explicitly detailed, their work consistently engages with community-based methodologies.
