Stephen M. Pizer, Kenan Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), is a pioneering figure in medical imaging and computer vision. Affiliated with the Departments of Computer Science, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, and Biomedical Engineering, he founded and leads UNC’s Medical Image Display & Analysis Group. His research spans over 50 years, focusing on medical image processing, shape analysis, and 3D visualization.
- PhD in Computer Science from Harvard (1967)
- Member of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Physics Research Laboratory (1962–1973)
- Co-founder and Chairman of the Board, Morphormics, Inc.
His work includes probability on shape/appearance models, segmentation, interactive 3D graphics, and human vision. With over 290 publications, he has significantly influenced medical imaging, computer graphics, and biomedical engineering.
