Stephen L. Crites, Jr. is Professor and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Texas at El Paso's Department of Psychology. His research examines physiological and motivational processes influencing cognitive functions, utilizing event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to study attitude formation, stereotype activation, and judgment processes.
Research investigates how brain activity reflects evaluative judgments and social categorization, including how attitudes automatically activate upon stimulus exposure and how stereotypes influence social perception. Studies employ neurophysiological measures to understand judgment formation under varying motivational states and contexts.
Publications demonstrate methodological innovation in psychophysiological approaches, including ERP paradigms for detecting concealed attitudes and meta-analyses of priming effects. Recent work focuses on neural correlates of attitude-behavior consistency, stereotype incongruity processing, and food perception dynamics.
Service includes NIH review panels, NSF Graduate Fellowship Program evaluation, and leadership roles in professional societies including Treasurer of the Society for the Study of Motivation.
