Stephen Hurley is a Senior Lecturer in Employment and Equality Law at the University of Winchester's Department of Law (Faculty of Law, Crime and Justice). He holds a practising solicitor license, enabling him to contribute to the University’s Legal Advice Service. His career includes over a decade in private practice as an Employment Law partner, advising on contentious and non-contentious matters, alongside tribunal advocacy experience. He has pioneered law student employability initiatives, including establishing pro bono legal advice centers.
His research focuses on philosophical belief discrimination, disability harassment, and workplace rights. Notable projects include a PhD on legal protections for non-religious philosophical beliefs. He regularly publishes in law journals and presents at conferences such as the Society of Legal Scholars and the University of Worcester’s Rights and Justice series.
Professional affiliations include the Society of Legal Scholars, Employment Lawyers Association, and Discrimination Law Association. As a Justice of the Peace (2012–2022), he adjudicated adult criminal cases. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, reflecting his teaching excellence in Employment and Discrimination Law across undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional training programs.
