His research and artistic practice bridge visual arts, art history, and religious studies, particularly exploring Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), medieval symbolism, and multicultural themes. His notable series include:
- The Rebbe Series: Surrealistic acrylic/oil paintings depicting mystical experiences in rural Jewish life.
- Morandi Dreams: Diptych still-life homages to Giorgio Morandi, blending rigidity with expressive human elements.
- Layered: Watercolor collages combining handmade and found materials, addressing political and cultural narratives.
Stephen’s work has been nationally exhibited, including at the Albert Schweitzer Institute and Perkins Gallery. He also curates and chairs sessions like “Going Solo: Strategies for One Person Art Programs” at FATE conferences. His sculptural practice juxtaposes soft wood with fired clay or bronze to evoke historical and ritualistic themes.
- Curator/Juror for Images of Peace (2007), sponsored by Quinnipiac University’s Albert Schweitzer Institute.
He maintains a studio at the Erectors Square Complex in New Haven, CT, and has participated in artist residencies like Weir Farm AIR (2024). His work has won numerous awards, though specific titles are not listed.
