Stephen Harrison is the Giovanni Armenise-Harvard Professor of Biomedical Science at Harvard Medical School and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital. A pioneer in structural virology, he determined the first high-resolution structure of a virus (tomato bushy stunt virus) and has since studied complex human pathogens including human papillomavirus, dengue virus, and HIV.
Harrison's research focuses on viral entry mechanisms, particularly how nonenveloped viruses penetrate host cells. His laboratory studies conformational changes in viral entry proteins using structural biology techniques, with recent work on reovirus and rotavirus providing insights into membrane penetration. These investigations reveal fundamental properties of viruses and their host cells, potentially identifying targets for antiviral drugs.
Awarded the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize, Paul Ehrlich Prize, and ICN International Virology Prize, Harrison is an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and member of the National Academy of Sciences. His discoveries have transformed understanding of virus architecture and infection mechanisms.
