Stephen Haber is the A.A. and Jeanne Welch Milligan Professor at Stanford University’s School of Humanities and Sciences, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, and the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He holds professorships in History, Political Science, and Economics (by courtesy). His research focuses on the political and economic origins of global income disparities, banking regulation, and the interplay between ecological conditions and economic development. Haber earned his Ph.D. in History from UCLA and has been at Stanford since 1987, serving as associate dean for social sciences (1995–1998). He is a distinguished educator, having received every teaching award offered by Stanford.

His research integrates geospatial tools and machine learning to explore why prosperous democracies cluster geographically. Recent projects include analyzing pre-industrial ecological conditions and their long-term economic impacts. He is the author of five books and editor of six, including Fragile by Design and The Battle Over Patents.
Awards: Recipient of all major teaching awards at Stanford University.
