Previously, he was Co-Head of the Music Department from 2018 to 2020. His academic journey began as a Lecturer in Music in 2011 after completing his PhD at Goldsmiths.
Graham received his education at University College Dublin (UCD) and King's College London before earning his doctorate at Goldsmiths. His scholarly foundation bridges Irish musical traditions with broader European theoretical frameworks.
Professor Graham's research spans twentieth and twenty-first century music with particular focus on underground, experimental, popular, and art musics. His work integrates music and cultural theory/philosophy, music and politics, and music analysis. He approaches music journalism as both a scholarly subject and professional practice, examining how music writing shapes cultural understanding. His theoretical analyses cover diverse musical landscapes from underground scenes to popular and avant-garde traditions.
Graham's publications reveal a consistent exploration of music's relationship to cultural change, boundary crossing, and historical context. His work often examines how musical genres evolve, how underground scenes negotiate mainstream culture, and how music writing documents cultural shifts. The progression from his early work on underground music to his recent focus on noise music demonstrates an evolving scholarly trajectory that maintains core interests in music's cultural and political dimensions.
Stephen Graham actively engages in knowledge exchange beyond academia, appearing in documentaries, providing media commentary, hosting a musicology podcast, and consulting on music education curriculum development for the ABRSM. He runs the Fringe and Underground Music Group at Goldsmiths, fostering research collaborations on alternative music scenes.
