Stephen Gibson is a Professor and Head of Department in the Department of Physics at Royal Holloway, University of London. He serves as Deputy Director of the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science and leads the Accelerator Group at Royal Holloway. His research focuses on accelerator physics, particularly the development of advanced instrumentation for determining properties of intense hadron beams. He collaborates with CERN Beam Instrumentation on projects for the High Luminosity LHC and has built key instrumentation for CERN's Linac4.
Professor Gibson's educational background includes:
- D.Phil in Experimental Particle Physics from St. John's College, Oxford (2004)
- MSci Physics from University of Bristol (2000)
Professor Gibson's research spans accelerator physics and particle physics instrumentation. His work includes developing Electro-Optic Beam Position Monitors for the High Luminosity LHC, building transverse laserwire emittance scanners for CERN's Linac4, and implementing novel laserwire systems at the Front End Test Stand at RAL. He also studies beam-induced backgrounds affecting the ATLAS experiment. His research has significant implications for advancing particle accelerator technology and improving detector systems for high-energy physics experiments.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on accelerator instrumentation, beam diagnostics, and ATLAS experiment support. The research spans computational methods for particle detection, advanced beam monitoring systems, and searches for new physics phenomena. His work bridges theoretical concepts with practical engineering solutions for cutting-edge particle physics experiments.
Among his recognitions:
- Award-winning Outreach Coordinator
Professor Gibson has supervised numerous research projects and students, with 8 supervised works documented. He leads significant research grants including the John Adams Institute Core Grant (2025-2028), High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider UK Phase-II project, and the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science project. His funding comes primarily from the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
He leads the Accelerator Group at Royal Holloway, which collaborates closely with CERN Beam Instrumentation and other international partners. The group focuses on developing next-generation beam instrumentation and addressing challenges in particle accelerator physics.
