Prof Stephen Gethins is Professor of Practice in International Relations at the University of St Andrews. Previously, he served as UK Member of Parliament for North East Fife (2015–2019), sitting on the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee for two terms. His parliamentary work focused on global crises including Syria, Libya, and the Rohingya crisis, while co-authoring cross-party Brexit legislation. He has held roles as Special Adviser to Scotland’s First Minister on EU/international affairs and energy policy, and currently serves on the John Smith Trust Board and Beyond Borders Scotland.
Research interests include Scottish foreign policy, EU-UK relations, conflict resolution in post-Soviet regions, and climate diplomacy. He has conducted fieldwork in conflict zones like Georgia and Ukraine, and authored publications on geopolitical strategy, including books on Scotland’s international role and post-Afghanistan security cooperation. His work bridges academic research with policy advocacy, emphasizing practical solutions to global challenges.
