Stephen M. Gardiner is a Professor of Philosophy and the Ben Rabinowitz Endowed Professor of the Human Dimensions of the Environment at the University of Washington, Seattle. He also serves as Director of the Program on Ethics. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Cornell University (1999). His research focuses on global environmental problems, ethics of future generations, and virtue ethics, with a particular emphasis on climate change and intergenerational justice.
His key works include A Perfect Moral Storm (2011), Debating Climate Ethics (2016), and Dialogues on Climate Justice (2023). He has edited influential volumes such as The Oxford Handbook of Environmental Ethics (2016) and Climate Ethics: Essential Readings (2010). His articles appear in journals including Climatic Change, Journal of Political Philosophy, and Environmental Ethics.
Steve has received notable recognition, including the 2021 Academy Lecture for Humanities and Social Sciences from the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and the Alan Saunders Lecture in Public Ethics, broadcast by Australian Public Radio. His work bridges philosophy with urgent global challenges, emphasizing ethical dimensions of environmental policy and governance.
