Research Interests:
Stephen’s research focuses on modern and contemporary poetry, particularly Ted Hughes’s legacy and expressionist aesthetics. He explores intersections between autobiography, environmental humanities, and the ecological symbolism of species like the European eel. His community projects include the Ted Hughes Poetry Festival and Discovering Ted Hughes’s Yorkshire literary trails, which achieved a 4* Impact Case Study in the 2021 REF.
Recent Publications address apocalyptic themes in the Anthropocene, Ted Hughes’s expressionism, and Yorkshire’s literary landscapes. His 2023 publication Eely and upcoming monograph Ted Hughes’s Expressionism exemplify this interdisciplinary approach.
Scientific Activities:
Stephen has organized major conferences like ‘Apocalypse I’ and ‘Apocalypse II,’ co-developed the Ted Hughes-focused archive at Heritage Quay, and secured grants from Arts Council England, Victoria and Albert Purchase Fund, and Friends of the National Library.
He supervises PhD and Masters by Research students in creative writing and Ted Hughes studies and contributes to initiatives aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals such as environmental protection and cultural preservation.
