Stephen E. Cabaniss is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at The University of New Mexico. His research focuses on environmental biogeochemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemical education. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from MIT (1980), a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from the University of North Carolina (1986), and completed postdoctoral work at Harvard School of Public Health (1987).
His research employs agent-based modeling (ABM) and quantitative structure-reactivity relationships (QSPR) to study organic compounds' roles in soil formation, microbial energy transfer, and metal bioavailability in water. Current projects include metal complexation modeling, drinking water disinfection studies, and uranium speciation in groundwater. Experimental work includes arsenic adsorption on iron oxides and spectroscopic analysis of humic substances.
Selected publications highlight his contributions to environmental chemistry modeling and analytical techniques. His work emphasizes bridging theoretical and experimental approaches to address environmental challenges.
