Stephen E. Bradforth is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Southern California (USC) and Senior Advisor to the Dean for Research Strategy and Development in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. He holds a B.A. from Cambridge University (1987) and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (1992). His research focuses on ultrafast laser spectroscopy, investigating molecular dynamics in complex environments such as aqueous phases, organic photovoltaics, and DNA photodamage. He has held leadership roles including Department Chair (2014–2017), Divisional Dean (2017–2021), and currently advises on research strategy. His honors include the ACS Senior Experimental Physical Chemistry Award (2023), Packard Fellowship, and AAAS Fellowship.
Bradforth’s research employs techniques like time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and transient absorption to study solar energy conversion, photocatalysis, and DNA damage mechanisms. Collaborations span chemistry, physics, and engineering. His group has pioneered studies on tryptophan photodynamics in aqueous solutions, excited state dynamics of photosensitizers, and UV-induced DNA lesions. Under his mentorship, students explore topics ranging from carbanion spectroscopy to satellite DNA damage. He teaches courses in general chemistry, physical chemistry for life sciences, and freshman seminars.
- Education: B.A., 1987 (Cambridge University); Ph.D., 1992 (UC Berkeley)
- Administrative Roles: Department Chair (2014–2017), Divisional Dean (2017–2021)
