Stephen Dueppen is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oregon, College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on non-centralized political systems in West Africa, with extensive fieldwork at Kirikongo in Burkina Faso and collaborative projects in Senegal, Kenya, and New Mexico.
Research interests include:
- Egalitarian political systems
- Power dynamics in non-hierarchical societies
- Archaeological approaches to collective action
- West African pre-colonial governance
- Long-term societal evolution
- Material culture analysis
His work has been funded by prestigious grants from the National Science Foundation, Smithsonian Institution, American Council of Learned Societies, and National Geographic Society. He has published widely in top journals including American Antiquity, Antiquity, and Journal of African Archaeology, culminating in his 2012 book Egalitarian Revolution in the Savanna. Currently, he directs excavations at Kirikongo and regional surveys in the Mouhoun Bend area.
