Stephen David Beck is the Haymon Professor of Composition and Computer Music at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he also holds a joint appointment at the Center for Computation & Technology (CCT). He previously served as Associate Vice President for Research & Economic Development (2015–2024) and Director of the School of Music (2012–2015). At CCT, he founded the Cultural Computing research group and later served as its Interim Director.
Educational Background:
- Ph.D. in Music Composition and Theory from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), 1988
- Studied at IRCAM in Paris under an Annette Kade/Fulbright Fellowship (1985–1986)
Dr. Beck’s research focuses on large-scale sound diffusion technologies, granular sound synthesis, interactive computer music, and music over networks. He pioneered the establishment of LSU’s Experimental Music & Digital Media (EMDM) doctoral program and founded the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana (LOLs). His work explores the intersection of technology and musical expression, emphasizing how computational tools can enhance performers’ capabilities in timbre, technique, and creativity through the lens of natural and mathematical principles.
